TextEdit is a multipurpose text editor, with built in wizards, functions and other features to help web developers create web pages easier, quicker and with more options.
The basic idea of TextEdit was to replace Windows Notepad, which doesn't offer much function-wise.
TextEdit's aim was to also provide the user with features to make web development easier and more productive.
TextEdit now offers features such as:

Does exactly what it says on the tin!

Gives you easy access to HTML tags, making web development that extra bit quicker!
